Chapter 7

“What am I looking at,” Lucy said from inside the car. A screen on her comm showed a plain, nondescript building, with two obvious gangsters standing outside the only door she could see.

“From government records, that warehouse is owned by a shell corporation connected to a local gang,” Pearl said. “Authorities believe it’s the local hub for smuggling, and the home base of operations for the current head of the gang, known as Diamond.”

“What leads you to believe the target would be here?”

“Earlier today they made a data connection that resulted in uploads of files that match some of those that were stolen. I believe this crime syndicate hired our target to rob the software company to get information they can use for various crimes. They wasted no time in putting that information to use, and that transmission is what I tracked.”

“Any idea how many others I’m going to find in there?”

The Wyvern was maintaining a high-altitude surveillance position over her location. With the top of the line scanners and imaging equipment, it gave Lucy the advantage of having eyes in the back of her head when going into tight situations.

“No. Other than the two outside the door, my scanners can not see inside the warehouse. It looks like they are using some high-end shielding to prevent surveillance.”

Of course, the bad guys were getting more sophisticated. Especially ones that had established themselves as being in control of a large territory.

“And why haven’t the locals taken this nest down?”

“I know this will surprise you, but my records search showed signs of payoffs and other compromising instances that would lead me to believe the gang could be protected from local authorities. I will notify the guild that you may be met with repercussions for harassing the gang.”

“You’re so thoughtful, Pearl,” Lucy quipped.

The venator guild maintained diplomatic ties with all the worlds in the system they operated in. It was part of establishing authority to chase down targets, but also to shield venators from corrupt locals and unique laws that might impede apprehending a target.

“Keep the car here. I‘ll go in on foot. Let me know if anyone else approaches.”

Lucy exited the vehicle and did a check of her gear. If they left two goons outside as doormen, there could be a half-dozen or more inside. With the level of anti-surveillance being used, Lucy would go with the assumption she couldn’t jam their video cameras. Working fast would be her plan of attack.

The warehouse was out in the open and offered no cover to approach undetected. Lucy kept her long trench coat closed to conceal her weapons and let her hips be the distraction she needed to get close.

“Hey there, girl, what brings you this way?” One goon said as he pushed the other away and stepped forward to greet her.

“I got lost. Maybe you could help me?” Lucy spoke slowly as she sauntered closer to the buffoons.

“Oh, yeah. I know I can help you. Where are you looking for?”

She was close enough to lean into the man’s ear.
